Typing the letter V opens/closes the chat window. If you are in a group, typing the letter B opens/closes the group window. Is this what you meant?

Well I know that's how to close it but I just wanted it smaller on the screen. Also do you know if I can take off player Nameplates? The Nameplates just break the immersion for me.

    Thanks!

Only way to make it smaller is to increase your screen resolution so everything is smaller. You can opt to show your name or not but you can't make others' names disappear. To change that, select Options instead when on the "Switch Character" screen.

The chat window is facing many problems right now.
    - When you die for instance you have no access to it even though you see what people are writing behind the screen.
    - When you are in shop or melting it disappears. Sometimes I am waiting for a group and in the meantime I keep myself busy with the inventory - but then I do not know when people are ready. A bit annoying indeed.
    - If you want to write to someone in private, you need to click on their name every time (it used to remember the person in the past and when you started writing it would automatically private to that person)
    - When I am on main, I see all chats, but when I am in group chat I don't see guild messages.

Bottom line is that the chat will eventually need to be reworked. Separate window, more independent on what you are doing in the game, more predictable and easier to communicate in private messages. BigPoint could definitely use steam chat as an inspiration starting point for this.
