Another big issue i have is that while it's wonderful that drakensang offers itself in 10+ different languages, i only speak english. and on the Eastern US Server, most people speak languages i don't know even basic words in, and that's strange considering folks in the eastern US mostly speak english. would it be impossible to implement a real time translator so i can understand more than a handful of people trying to speak to me? i can name other games that pulled this off, namely, Wizard 101. aside from that though the trouble is that communication is important in setting up groups, co ops, guilds, and even cooperating in the battle arena, it's hard to make a plan to win the fight if no one but you knows what it is after all.

Agathon may be located in the US, but it serves far more than just the US population. It covers Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, etc, New Zealand, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, India, China, Thailand, etc. As does Tegan. Just the same as, although the EU servers are all in Germany, they are not solely for people living in German or only for players who speak German.
As for in-game translation: have you tested Google Translate? They spent massive wads of money and employed experienced language experts and still most translations come out as utter gibberish. And it's even worse when slang/colloquialism is used.
A better option may be to have certain join-able phrases which can be clicked on. e.g. "Looking for guild", "Looking for group for...". PWQ1-PWQ7, L1-L3, etc. Once the appropriate phrases are selected and "sent", they are displayed to each player in their own language. This would be far more limiting than an open translator, but it would be accurate and non-ambiguous..

Other games have pulled if off without players even realizing they're from different countries, it's not impossible, only difficult, and possibly expensive, but it still severely cuts into how well players make friends and coordinate in battle

There's your answer: The game is clearly being maintained with a strict eye toward the bottom line (though the decisions made by the devs/finance team in that vein appear to be misguided and not well thought out in many cases, discouraging more and more players to avoid events, and more and more to leave the game, judiging by the numerous delcarations here; hard for me to tell in reality, as I'm on Tegan, which has always been somewhat of a ghost town since I started a couple years ago), so any expensive idea is dead before you finish typing it up.

Tegan is dead because of the people's mentality. I can't blame them though ... the education system in their countries sucks.
They think everyone should speak their language ... but they are not obligated to learn other's.
Grimmag and Heredur are having players who are speaking at least few languages ... and they come from places all around the world.
Yet they are not having this issue.

Language is only a small part. Tegan was never confused with an active server, but it was the mass exodus after R155 that really put a major dent in it. As subsequent releases added more frustration, more quit or at least play a lot less. Add to that the constant failed promises from the game and you have a recipe for what is happening.

There are other games out there that don't have dev's going out of their way to ruin what isn't broken.

That's true only to a certain degree, there's a lot of people who make an effort to learn basic phrases in english just to be able to coordinate while playing, and I've personally helped quite a lot of people with English-Spanish translation/communication and viceversa, I actually like to translate for people, helps me practice my own english and they learn some basic stuff to manage for themselves, eventually.

In reality, due to Tegan's low population people adapt through language barriers as best as they can, I've been grouped with Japanese, Brazilian, Filipino, Indian, and some other countrie's people and we've managed quite well, although I only speak 2 languages and know little basic stuff from others, like Tagalog.

So, long story short, although there might be a group of people constantly whinning about language barriers, the daily life of the server has shown me a lot more of people that pushes through them and success, and there's a handful of people like me willing to help ;).

    Regards.

Online games are more or less about effective communication to create ecstatic communities. Without the interaction between players, DSO's bottom line is only going to get worse. That aside, I've yet to meet a person on Agathon from the United States after returning to the game.

I've taken to pulling up google translate via the search list (its right at the top and useful).

I would even support if there was a "translate window" at the bottom of the chat and when you Ctrl+Click on a person, in the dropdown list is "translate this text" and it would show either "at the bottom" or "under the entry" in your designated language (which we all have as part of the login). This way, you don't have the overhead of translating everything, most of which you don't care about anyway.

I've even put my English into the Google Search Translate and then typed what it gave me into the text.

However, using the Google Search Translate is very slow, no cut and paste into/outof the client, and everything has to be typed by hand both ways.

I've used it both for English <> Spanish and for English <> Portugese. Yes, it's not perfect, but most of the time it gets the point across. And occassionally provides humor when something is misspelled.

I'm on Agathon, and I'm from the U.S.A., born and bred.

There are a lot of us. We aren't as verbal as those using Portuguese or Tagalog but we're around.
